Transpiration Lab Essays - Plant Physiology, Plant Anatomy
Transpiration Lab Water is essential to plants in many ways. It first provides the major substance for living, to keep cells from shriveling up and dying. The second major function is to keep the plants rigidity. As plant cells become turgid, full of water, the cells expand, filling the extent of their cell walls, which are kept taught with turgor pressure. If the cells lose water, two problems occur. First, the cells dehydrate, causing the organism to die. Second, turgor pressure is lost as cells become flaccid, limp and unfilled, causing a loss of support for the plants structure which makes it appear wilted. As aquatic plants evolved into large complex land plants, an adaptation occurred in the center of plants to allow full growth without the problem of water loss. A system of vascular bundles extending from the tips of the furthest leaves to the deepest roots of each plant developed, carrying water in xylem sap and sugar in phloem. While phloem can transport sugar in any direction within the plant, xylem can only move water up, from root to leaf. Once in the leaf, the water evaporates through stomata?tiny gaps in the lower epidermis of each leaf, which are regulated by guard cells?a process called transpiration The movement of water into and out of the xylem involves water pressure factors in different sections of the plant. As water slips into the roots through osmosis, a positive water pressure gently pushes the water into the plants roots and supplies a jumpstart for the water's journey up the vascular bundle. However, it is not this pressure that supplies a great force towards the upward movement of water; it is the evaporation of water from the stomata that pulls water upward and out. When the stomata are open to take in carbon dioxide for carbohydrate production, water begins to evaporate and seep out of the tiny holes in each leaf. With a constant pull of water outward, other water molecules are pulled up to replace it. The pull is provided by the cohesive properties of water molecules as each leaving molecule pulls on another molecule which is hydrogen bonded to it. The process continues as a series of movements until all the water molecules in the xylem sap are being pulled upward by their hydrogen bonds to the water molecules ahead of them. Thus the slight negative pressure occurs. Different environmental factors can have impacts on the intensity of water evaporation, and thus the rate of plant transpiration. Just like water in an open environment, a dry environment would increase the evaporation of water, and the rate of transpiration. A hot or very bright environment would do the likewise. Conversely, moist, dark, or cool environments would allow for a slower rate of transpiration because water would not be as readily evaporative. When testing the rate of transpiration for any given plant, I hypothesize that plants exposed to copious quantities of light will transpire more rapidly than those in a regular environment. Methods We selected a bean plant on which to test varied environmental factors on transpiration. The different environments included excessive sunlight?a floodlight one meter from the plant, wind/dry air?a stationary fan approximately one meter away from the plant on low speed, humid/rainy climate?leaves misted, then covered with a clear plastic bag (open at the bottom for air exchange). Normal room conditions were also tested for the control. One bean plant was used for each simulated environment. To set up the experiment, four pieces of Tygon clear plastic tubing were cut to sixteen inches. Inside each was placed the tip of a 0.1-mL pipette. Taking four ring stands, one paired with each tube/pipette set, each end of the tubing was clamped, so that the tubing made a "U" shape. Next the tubing was filled with water so that no air bubbles were present and that water completely filled the tubing and pipette. The four bean plants were each placed into the open end of their respective tubing, then sealed with petroleum jelly around the sides (to prevent accidental water evaporation). The plants were allowed to sit for ten minutes before the initial reading was made, to allow for equilibration. After recording levels of water for all plant environment simulations, readings were made in ten minute increments until thirty minutes elapsed. After this, the leaves were cut off of each plant to be weighed and measured. With these figures, we found the total surface area of each plant, after which we could calculate the rate of transpiration for each climate. Results To

Northern Lights essays The book I decided to read for the assignment is The Northern Lights written by Lucy Jago. This book by Jago details the true story of Kristian Birkeland, the man who put his life aside to figure out the secrets of the Northern Lights. This book describes the Journey of six men who climbed to the tallest peaks of Haldde Mountain to record and study the aurora borealis. These Six men were; Clement Isaakson Haetta, Kristian Olaf Birkeland, Bjorn Helland-Hansen, Elisar Boye, Kristoffer Knudsen, and Sem Saeland. While spending six months during the fierce winter, the six men recorded data off of state of the art instruments like the anemometer, which was used to record wind speeds. Also used was a Barometer to tell whether the air pressure changed during the aurora shows, while the Hygrometer measured the air humidity. The most important instrument used though was the magnetometers, which was used to measure changes in the strength and direction and the Earths magnetic field. Birkeland hoped that these instruments would give them answers to many questions asked about the bright lights. Some questions they were hoping to answer were; are the lights accompanied by a crackling noise, could the lights make hair sta nd on end, did they touch the ground, did they occur during daytime? By the end of the winter Birkeland was convinced that his theory, that the force disturbing the magnetic field came directly from the sun in narrow beams of electrically charged particles called cathode rays, was correct. A British scientist once showed that cathode rays consisted of high velocity streams of negatively charged particles: electrons. Birkeland was convinced that the Sun put out similar rays and that these particles hit the magnetic field of the earth and followed the field lines down toward the poles, where they struck atoms in the atmosphere and the energy created by the collisions was ...

Forest Ecosystem and Biodiversity Definitions A forest ecosystem is the basic ecologic unit in a particular forest that exists as home for a community of both native and introduced classified organisms.à Aà forest ecosystem isà named for the primary tree species that form the canopy. It is definedà by all the collective living inhabitants of that forest ecosystem that co-exist together in symbiosis to create a unique ecology.à In other words, a forest ecosystem is typically associated with land masses covered in trees and those trees are oftenà classified by foresters intoà forest cover types. Examples of just a fewà broad names in North America are The northern hardwood ecosystem, the ponderosa pine ecosystem, the bottomland hardwoodà forest ecosystem, the jack pine forest ecosystem and so on. The forest ecosystem is just one of a number of unique ecosystems including prairies, deserts, polar regions, and great oceans, smaller lakes, and rivers. Forest Ecology and Biodiversity The word ecology comes from the Greek oikos, meaning household or place to live. These ecosystems or communities are usually self-sustaining. The word usually is used because some of these communities can become unbalanced very quickly when detrimental factors occur. Some ecosystems, like tundra, coral reefs, wetlands, and grasslands are very fragile and very small changes can affect their health. Larger ecosystems with wide diversity are much more stable and somewhat resistant to harmful changes. A forest ecosystem community is directly related to species diversity. Generally, you can assume that the more complex the structure, the greater is its species diversity. You should remember that a forest community is much more than just the sum of its trees. A forest is a system that supports interacting units including trees, soil, insects, animals, and man. How a Forest Ecosystem Matures Forest ecosystems tend to always be moving toward maturity or into what foresters call a climax forest. This maturing, also called forest succession, of the ecosystem increases diversity up to the point of old age where the system slowly collapses. One forestry example of this is the growth of trees and the entire system movingà toward an old growth forest. When an ecosystem is exploited and exploitation is maintained or when components of the forest begin to naturally die, then that maturing forest ecosystem goes into declining tree health. Management of forests for sustainability is desirable when forest diversity is threatened by overuse, resource exploitation, old age, and poor management. Forest ecosystems can be disrupted and harmed when not properly sustained. A sustained forest that is certified by a qualified certification program gives some assurance that the forest is managed to allow maximum diversity while satisfying the managers environmental and economic demands. Scientists and foresters have dedicated their entire careers trying to understand even a small part of forest ecosystems. Complex forest ecosystems are extremely diverse, ranging from dry desert shrub land to large temperate rain forests. These natural resource professionals have categorized forest ecosystems in North America by placing them into forest biomes. Forest biomes are broad categories of natural tree/plant communities.

Brown vs. Board of Education Art Exhibit :: Art Museum Exhibit Segregation
Black and White Walking into Krannert Art Museum, I experienced something I have never experienced before. That something was actually analyzing and appreciating artwork. I have been around artwork before and have looked at many times and I have enjoyed it but I have never really sat down with art to break it down and notice the little details that make it so powerful. Today I did at Krannert Art Museum while looking at their Brown vs. Board exhibit. I was able to break everything down and notice the details and by doing this I got a much more influential experience out of it. At first glance it is the colors in the room that jump out at you and draws your attention most but after really looking around you see the colorfulness isnââ¬â¢t the what the artist wants to attract your attention but instead on all of the black and white all over the room which fits perfectly with the idea the exhibit is trying to get across. This idea is that blacks and whites are equal and together, as Americans, they are much more powerful then when they stand apart as whites and blacks. As soon as I walked into the exhibit I noticed it had kind of an eerie aura to it. The lights were dim and there was a peculiar silence that was only interrupted about every ten seconds or so by a low, almost electronic sounding, humming coming from one of the distant rooms. Also, every so often the lights would flicker a little and between that, and the movie that was playing on the side wall switching between clips, it gave the room a very sporadic supernatural atmosphere. I walked into the two different rooms and two things caught my eye. The brightly colored flowers and people wallpaper on the left side of the first room, and the huge colored picture of Brett Charles Cook, on the left side of the second room. I noticed that this huge portrait was done using mostly blue and orange paint, which may have been a way for the artists to get the students there to connect with the painting or just to catch their attention.

The six internal factors are: organizational purpose, mission, and philosophy, Organizational planning, Organizational operations, Human resources, Technological resources, financial resources.Economic factors including knowing what financial resources the company has and where funding is coming from weather it is government funds, donated funds, fees for service, or other agency income. Sociological factors include understanding community demographic both in terms of client and community. Understand the makeup in terms of income, education, gender, age, and other demographic factors. Technological factors for human service agencies can understand how to use the equipment such as computer hardware and software as well as new treatment approaches.Political/prof essional factors include knowing laws and regulations from federal, state and local levels as well as a political climate, or the attitudes of community and local leaders and the general public towards the services provided. Professional factors in human services include being aware of licensing and certification standards; and staying in good working relations with these agencies. When looking at all four of the factors it is heard to say what would be the most important.They all have good value, but if I had to I would say that Sociological factors seem to be very important. One needs to know the people that you are going to help each and every day. To make sure that you are able to give them the help that they may need. Organizational Purpose is to have the understanding of a mission statement and a vision that is intended to provide the logic and the organizing theme . human service agency believes in what it hopes to achieve and what services they will provide to achieve its mi ssion and the vision, goals that were set.Organizational planning is having a strategy and plan to identify were the organization ideally would like to be in a time frame such as five or more years. This takes some brainstorming and looking at available data so they are able to project future needs. Organizational Operations requires regular review and examination of the programs and services offered to make sure that performance is measuring up to expectations. Human Resources refer to the many functions that are involved in the supervision and management of the organizationââ¬â¢s employees and volunteers.Staff requires a working knowledge of human resources law. Technological Resources can include support and consulting services, computer resources, financial management expertise, marketing and public relations expertise, and other technologies that may be used to support the work of the organization. Financial Resources requires a careful examination of budget documents to det ermine where the funding is coming from and what obligations the agency assumes in accepting funding from each of the various sources.
